Places of Sanctuary
A story collection project exploring the past, present and most importantly the future of North Tyneside with and for the people of Wallsend
ABOUT THE PROJECT
In collaboration with Academic Science Health Network and the Healthy Happy Places programme, Mustard Stories Arts was commissioned to work with the people of Wallsend to explore places of sanctuary in Wallsend and how there could be more.
From January to March 2023, we met with members of the community each week at Anxious Minds in Forum Shopping Centre.
We shared stories of an old Wallsend, thoughts on it now and our hopes for it's future and led workshops inspired by the Masterplan for the area.
These workshops led to the creation of an animation by Lily Kroese accompanied by a zine to capture the voices of the community.
A PLACE OF STRENGTH A PLACE TO BELONG A PLACE TO PROSPER A PLACE TO GROW A PLACE OF SANCTUARY
“One of things that I’ve always been told about Wallsend especially, is that anybody who’s got any potential has to leave and go awat to university but I think people are wrong. Wallsend is a fantastic place to live.”
“In order to really create healthy places, we need that deep meaningful engagment.”
“To the participants who shared with us their memories and stories, your voices matter, this is what makes a place.” - Rachel Turnbull
